Mara,

Please find the revised figure below. My mother will tell you it is generous, and she is right, and you should take it, and I am hoping you do not, which is not a sentence a man is supposed to put in an email about a property, so I have not copied the solicitor.

Revised offer attached. That is the part you can forward to anyone.

Here is the part you cannot. I have written this email nine times. The other eight were the professional version and you would have seen straight through every one, because you have always seen straight through me, which is the entire reason I left at twenty-one. It was easier to break your heart than to let you keep looking at me like that until you saw what I was carrying. I told myself leaving was the decent option. It was the cowardly one wearing the decent one's coat.

I do not want to buy your mother's house. I want to be in it, with you, with the lights off, while you are still furious with me, because I have worked out that I would rather have you furious and in the room than calm and four hundred miles away. Reply about the offer. Or come to the house tonight and do not reply at all. I will understand either answer.

Callum
